In December 2022, Tigua Facility Services (TFS) successfully completed the design and construction of the new 750 SF addition to US Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) existing K-9 building in Miami, Florida.

Awarded in 2021, the project was a testament to TFS’s broad construction, security, and technological capabilities. The building houses the canines that support the Agricultural Canine program, which plays an integral part in CBP’s mission in the interception of prohibited agricultural products at international airports. The renovations and upgrades will enable the facility to meet CBP’s standards and mission needs.

As the contractor, TFS provides all labor, materials, tools, equipment, and design-build services as necessary for its design and construction. The addition includes a new paved parking area, a fire suppression system, a K-9 holding area, plumbing systems, an office area, a storage room, a break room, and a K-9 wash area. TFS also designed a new canopy in the existing K-9 outdoor exercise yard, storage sheds, and additional dog kennels.

The project was also a strong demonstration of TFS’s Physical Security capabilities and ability to meet and comply with CBP design standards. The team installed CCTV cameras, ACS, intrusion detection systems, and access control. The security equipment was also specially designed to use CBP network infrastructure, approved by CBP’s Office of Information and Technology.

“The Miami Canine Kennel project was completed on schedule and within budget. The project management was excellent, as was the performance of the subcontractor. Workers on the site were professional and workmanship was professional,” said CBP’s Contracting Office Representative Jerry Green. “On-site management was performed at the highest level. Cooperation with the customer was excellent, and the contract managers went above and beyond to coordinate with the customer, third-party property owner, and other government agencies and divisions. The project is a complete success.”
